About the Speaker
Ibim Cookey (b. 1999) is a multi-award-winning contemporary artist and architect whose work bridges art, architecture, and cultural identity. Born in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Nigeria, he earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Architecture from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Enugu State.
An Art Ambassador for the Rivers State Ministry of Culture and Tourism, Cookey’s creative journey began in childhood, when his passion for drawing evolved into a distinctive photorealistic and mixed-media style. His portraits often merge graphic and charcoal pencil drawings with vivid designs inspired by African fabrics. The interplay between monochrome realism and brightly patterned textiles reflects his exploration of identity, culture, and heritage—particularly that of the Niger Delta people. The acrylic-painted backgrounds, echoing West African wax prints, serve as expressions of pride and self-confidence rooted in local tradition.
Cookey has exhibited both locally and internationally, with showcases at Art Basel Miami, Context Art Miami, the Athenaeum Hotel in Athens, St. James’s Market Pavilion in London, and West Ham Olympic Stadium in the UK. In Nigeria, his works have been featured at Alexis Galleries, Gallery at the Landmark, and Delaroke Art Gallery.
His artistic excellence has earned him numerous accolades, including the Nigerian Teen Choice Award (2017), Special Recognition Award for Creativity (Nigerian Festival of Awards, 2018), and Artistic Personality of the Year (Nigeria Hype Awards, 2019). In 2023, the British Government acquired his piece King Jaja’s Storyboard from his solo exhibition at Alexis Galleries—a milestone in his career. He was also mentored by renowned artist-architect Demas Nwoko through a residency at New Culture Design Studio.
Rooted in culture and social commentary, Cookey’s work tells stories that connect deeply personal narratives with broader global experiences, celebrating African identity through a contemporary lens.
